The Concert (Le Concert)
dir. Radu Mihaileanu. 2009 France 119 mins Cert. U

A comedy with a serious side; a feel-good film that isn’t lightweight. A conductor of the Bolshoi orchestra, removed for political reasons, is given a second chance thirty years later and grabs it!

19th January 2011
The Hurt Locker
dir. Kathryn Bigelow. 2008 USA 131 mins Cert. 15

This is an intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world – disarming bombs in the heat of combat. A stunning insight into something we hear about on the news all too frequently.
Oscars for best film & best director 2010. BAFTAs for best film & best director 2010

A Prophet (Un Prophète)
dir. Jacques Audiard. 2009 France 155 mins Cert. 18

A young, naïve, Arab man is sent to a French prison run by the Corsican Mafia – the film follows his rise to power and the resultant shift in power to the Muslims in the jail.

16th February 2011
Me and Orson Welles
dir. Richard Linklater. 2009 UK/USA 114 mins Cert. 12A

An entertaining insight into the character and ego of Citizen Kane director Orson Welles. The story probes behind the scenes of a Broadway theatrical production – featuring a mesmerising performance by Christian McKay as Welles.

9th March 2011
The Wave (Die Welle)
dir. Dennis Gansel. 2008 Germany 107 mins Cert. 15

A teacher’s unusual experiment to demonstrate to his students what life is like under a dictatorship spins horribly out of control when he forms a unit with a life of its own. A shocking and powerful film.

16th March 2011 NB - This film will be shown in Cranbrook School Lecture Theatre
A Night at the Opera
dir. Sam Wood. 1935 USA 96 mins U

Probably the best and funniest Marx brothers film, destroying pomposity and pretension at a stroke. Contains the brilliant contract negotiation between Groucho and Chico; and the ‘stateroom’ scene is an all time classic.

23rd March 2011
Departures (Okuribito)
dir. Yôjirô Takita. 2008 Japan 130 mins Cert. 12A

A film about a newly unemployed cellist who takes a job preparing the dead for funerals. Depressing? Not at all! Intriguing, uplifting, enlightening - even funny.
