Modern Times
dir. Charlie Chaplin. 1936 USA 87 mins Cert. U

Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Tramp’ struggles to live in modern industrial society with the help of a young homeless woman. Chaplin’s last ‘silent’ film, filled with sound effects, was made when everyone else was making talkies. An incredibly inventive film about the mechanised age.

Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in)
dir. Tomas Alfredson. 2009 Sweden 115 mins Cert. 15

Multiple award-winning film. Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, an attractive but peculiar girl, who has been 12 for 200 years and happens to be a vampire! A beautiful, haunting film.

My Little Chickadee
dir. Edward F. Cline. 1940 USA 83 mins Cert. PG

The great W. C. Fields is teamed with the legendary Mae West in this classic comedy. He is a con man, she is a ‘loose-ish’ woman; together – and apart – they attempt to tame Wild-West Greasewood City. This is W. C. Fields at his best.

24th November 2010
The White Ribbon (Das Weisse Band)
dir. Michael Haneke. 2009 Germany 144 mins Cert. 15

Strange events happen in a north German village pre-First World War. The children of the village seem to be at the heart of the mystery. Gripping, thought-provoking drama.
Two Oscar nominations

8th December 2010
Mighty Aphrodite
dir. Woody Allen. 1995 USA 95 mins Cert. 15

A very funny, very clever Woody Allen film from his classic period. When a New York sportswriter discovers that his adopted son is a genius, he seeks out the boy’s birth mother – a prostitute. Essentially a modernised Greek drama, this comes with a complete, funny Greek chorus!
